Press Release Body: Completing a revolutionary, state-of-the-art residential village in Israel's Negev for more than 8000 physically and mentally impaired children and young adults is the goal of the Aleh Foundation's 2007 Annual Awards Dinner, which will take place in Manhattan on November 15. The event, to be held in the Grand Ballroom of the Gotham, will honor two of the organization's heroes - U.S. Senator Joseph Lieberman and Israeli Maj. Gen. Doron Almog - as it pays tribute to the memory of their loved ones who had special relationships with Aleh.
Marcia Lieberman, the senator's late mother, was a longtime supporter of the Aleh, Israel's network of residential facilities for children with severe physical and cognitive disabilities, which already cares for more than 650 children in four branches across Israel. The most recently established branch is Aleh's Rehabilitative Village in the Negev, a 25-acre complex--the first of its kind--designed specifically to care for people with severe developmental disabilities. Plans call for the Village to house 250 disabled young residents and provide outpatient care and services to an additional 8000 children annually. Thanks to generous contributions of the Aleh Foundation, the first stage of construction was completed last summer, with 65 children already living in the Village.
Eran Almog, severely disabled son of Entebbe hero Maj. Gen. Doron Almog, was the moving force behind the establishment of Aleh Negev. The young man was one of the first residents of the Village until his untimely death last year. "Heroism takes many forms," says Maj. Gen. Almog, who chairs Aleh Negev with his wife, Didi. \"We\'re turning now to friends of the Aleh Foundation to help us care for the \'superheroes\' among our young patients and their exceptional staff at Aleh.\"
The Dinner marks the fourth annual event by the Aleh Foundation on behalf of the Aleh Negev Rehabilitative Village. With over three million dollars having been raised to date, this year\'s goal is to bring in over $1.25 million dollars for this vital facility for Israel\'s handicapped.
Joining honorees Senator Lieberman and Maj. Gen. Almog at the gala dinner will be Israeli Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger, who will deliver a dedication in memory of Mrs. Marcia Lieberman. David Freidman and David Beyda are co-chairing the event. For honorary chairpersons Brian and Ilana Lipman, Aleh holds a special importance: their daughter Ora, born blind and brain-damaged, is \"a shining beacon for those whose lives she touches.\" In Ora\'s honor, they are working diligently to assist the children of Aleh. The 2007 Aleh Patron of the Year Award will be presented to Dr. Alisa R. Kasachkoff, in tribute to her generosity and dedication to the Aleh Foundation.
